Though it’s less than 2 miles from both the state capital building and the University of South Carolina, it manages a low profile. In 2003, the community voted in favor of the neighborhood, founded in 1900, being designated an architectural conservation district.

And in the April 2011 edition of This Old House magazine, Melrose Heights was included in a list of 64 great historic neighborhoods. In a news release, the magazine characterized Melrose Heights, founded in 1900, as among the best in Southern college towns for families, gardening and walking.
